the cat sleeps in the dog bed
the dog is sleeping in my bed
and she might as well – I can no more sleep than the man in the moon.
does he do that? does the man in the moon sleep?
or is it always the midnight shift for him
staring down at us
keeping his inconstant vigil
only one night off per month
now brighter, now dim,
watching us watch the stars
as they fall, the satellites as
they spin, restless, relentless as the dawn
that comes for us all
